Making his hobby a profession Vaggelis Hatzivaritis, after producing wine just for his friends,
planted in 1994 the first vineyards by investing in his wife birth place. The region of Goumenissa
in Macedonia. Today the winery owns 12 hectares of vineyards. Grapes are exclusively cultivated
organically in the light to medium sandy soils of the region
Chatzivaristis estate focuses on the Greek varieties of Xinomavro, Negoska, Roditis and Assyrtiko
along some more cosmopolitan varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The latter though in smaller numbers. The most important wine is their Goumenisa PDO
bottling, the telltale blend of the region of Xinomavro and native Negoska. The winery was built
in 2007 and from 1994 until today almost all of the vineyard tasks are done manually and with
environmentally cautious manners to ensure top grape quality and minimum intervention during
the winemaking process.
